Twitter Announces New Censorship Compliance Policy

Twitter has had to make a difficult decision on censorship. All social media sites that have a global presence have to deal with local laws regarding censorship, and the path Twitter is taking deserves accolades for its transparency. From the WSJ today (http://on.wsj.com/zIGXLN), Twitter will begin blocking content by Geographic Region, rather than globally blocking content when a take down request isĀ receivedĀ from certain governments. The countries this will be practiced in are not specified, but Twitter states that some countries “differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there”, so it is unclear how widespread the practice will become.
